Highest Spiritual Good

For this definition I am going to use the definition I developed for my workshops and Ranger course (the format is for the latter), although I have taken out the Figures and reference to them from the Assumptions section.
1.6.4.8.1               Concept
The concept of “Highest Spiritual Good” is the idea that the best outcome from the point of view of the spiritual development/growth of individuals and/or groups of people in any situation may involve events/actions/situations that are not what the individuals/groups involved consider pleasant or desirable.

Thus, for instance, one may not receive healing to cure an illness so that one may repay a negative karmic debt.

By the same token, it may be for the Highest Spiritual Good that you achieve more than you could by your own effort, whether that is for return of your positive karmic debt, or to enable you to be of benefit to others, and hence something like a troubling health problem may have a seemingly miraculous cure.
1.6.4.8.2               Objectives
The objectives of this section are to provide a basic comprehension of the concept of Highest Spiritual Good, including the fact that it can result in benefits as well as what may appear to be hindrances.
1.6.4.8.3               Desired outcomes
Equanimity in the face of Highest Spiritual Good - whether that results in helping or hindering your situation.
1.6.4.8.4               Assumptions
Key assumptions are:

Ø  we have a non-physical part of our being (actually, several);

Ø  some part of this non-physical essence survives the death of the physical body; and

Ø  the essence which survives the physical death is capable of reincarnating into a different body.

Another assumption is that you are familiar with the concept of spiritual growth, including the notion that this Earth is a form of school, and our incarnations here are, to greater or lesser extent, for the purpose of promoting the growth of our “soul” (Higher Self).
1.6.4.8.5               Background
A term I was taught is Highest Spiritual Good, which is term acknowledging that you may have to go through turmoil and challenges and trouble - not only for karmic reasons, but also because you may need the strengthening experience, or you may have agreed to take something on to see whether others would help you (i.e., as a test of a friend, perhaps), or this may be needed to motivate you into learning thoroughly.

Something I differ from Buddhism and some other groups that teach about karma, is that I do not consider that everything is due to karma. There are learning experiences, tests etc. along the way - and I am of the opinion that there is some intelligent force (Goddess, Allah, JHVH, Great Spirit, God or whatever term you wish to use) having an influence on how karma and the universe work.

Hence, no matter how good your application of the techniques we will be learning about in this workshop, they may not work for you in all situations.

Now, there is a flip side to this as well: it may be for your Highest Spiritual Good to have some “troubles” removed from your life despite you not having the ability to do so by your own efforts. In other words, Highest Spiritual Good is not just about you losing out in some way, it can also act in your favour.

You cannot argue for HSG in terms of only one of these aspects (say, the negative outcomes): if you accept the concept, you must, in all honesty, argue for both manifestations of it, just as anyone who accepts karma must really argue for good karma as much as bad.
1.6.4.8.6               Techniques
There are no particular techniques to apply here. This is about a concept, so all that is required is for you to think about this, and maybe identify where you could benefit from an increased awareness of it. It is worth asking your guides to help teach you about this during your sleep state, and maybe even meditating on it.
1.6.4.8.7               Alternative viewpoints
Another view of “Highest Spiritual Good” is that it is of what is best, overall, in a situation. I actually consider this concept to be the “Greatest Spiritual Good”, and consider that it is different.

To illustrate, consider someone approaching an intersection during peak hour that is “blocked” – which means they cannot pass through the intersection and be clear of it. If the person enters the intersection, and is stopped with their car still in the intersection when the lights change, those cars wanting to go the other way cannot move. The “greatest good”, in this case the greatest driving good, would be for the person being considered to NOT enter the intersection unless they can completely clear it, so they do not block other cars.

However, what might be for the person’s Highest Spiritual Good is for them to enter the intersection, block other cars,. and be abused by the drivers they have blocked so that they learn to have more consideration for other people. In other words, it may be for the person’s Highest Spiritual Good to undergo an unpleasant experience (i.e., the abuse of others who they have prevented from driving through the intersection) in order to learn a lesson that is important for the person’s spiritual development – in this case, consideration of others.
It is also worth reading the definition of "negative learning".

As of the time this definition was written, I’ve touched on this idea in the following posts:
