I was taught this as a generic term to cover nonphysical "energies, people, places, objects, concepts, etc". Thus, one could refer to "astral units", for instance, rather than saying "astral energies, discarnate entities and the astrals of incarnate people, thought forms, energies associated with places or concepts, etc".
It is a very convenient short hand.
