(efficacy of) nonviolent protests

All of the below needs to be updated to consider the content of:

I also have some info on the lingering harmful effects of violence, including across incarnations and by tainting organisations, in:

Trying to define what nonviolence encompasses is a large task (although this, this, and this provides some scope), but I often want to refer to information on the efficacy of nonviolence. For that, I'm going to provide the list below, which I will expand if I ever get time:

From https://gnwmythr.blogspot.com/2020/07/post-no-1614-how-large-do-movements.html:

Erica Chenoweth and Maria J. Stephan have looked at statistical aspects of violent and non-violent campaigns, and found that violent campaigns have ~26% chance of success, but nonviolent campaigns have ~53% chance of success. In their book, “Why Civil Resistance Works” (pub. Amazon), they discuss a number of aspects contributing to this, and one is the size of the campaign, with non-violent campaigns having larger numbers of participants. ... Reports on  this work comment that civil resistance movements that engage at least 3.5% of the population have never failed to topple a dictator

This has been updated (in particular, evidence showing the 3.5% is a tendency, not a law, has been provided) at:

“Questions, Answers, and Some Cautionary Updates Regarding the 3.5% Rule”   Erica Chenoweth,   Carr Center,   Discussion Paper,   (northern hemisphere) Spring 2020   https://www.hks.harvard.edu/sites/default/files/2024-05/Erica%20Chenoweth_2020-005.pdf

Here is an old post of mine that may also be worth a look:

transmisia (a suggested replacement for transphobia)

Suggested here: as phobia means fear of, whereas what is generally being dealt with is hate of, the more accurate term is transmisia.

[Content Warning! sexual assault, including CSA] sexual assault (interim, partial post)

Note: CONTENT WARNING - this post covers discussion of sexual assault. Reader caution is recommended. Seek competent help - including professional - if you need it. For anyone distressed by anything in this post, or for any other reason considering seeking support, resources are available in Australia here, here, and here. In other nations, you will have to do an Internet search using terms such as “mental health support - <your nation>” (which, for instance, may lead to this, this, and this, in the USA, or this, this, and this, in France [biased towards English-language - my apologies]).

 PS - see also   ““She Said” IS Evidence”   https://youtu.be/KvanHITPNEc   “The Platner and Swalwell allegations exposed a huge myth in our discourse - that testimony “isn't evidence.””

Sexual assault is a crime that can be inflicted in many ways and potentially by many people - including:

  • cisgender men against cisgender women (the most prevalent - see here);
  • cisgender men against others - girls, boys, TGD people, and others (reading the Crimes Act section on this lists some sickening, truly disturbing possibilities);
  • cisgender women against cisgender men - as this is too often ignored  or treated with derision (which undoubtedly reduces the report rate), I’ve provided some links below on this problem, and also cisgender women against others (girls, boys, TGD people, and others);
  • TGD people against cisgender and TGD people; and
  • children against other children.

Sexuality is not an issue - especially in the case of child abuse, but LGB people are capable of committing sexual assault as well as heterosexual people.

Victims of sexual assault need support - and legal systems in most parts of the world need to stop double assaulting victims. "Myths" (lies of convenience to belief systems) need to be rebutted, and other (in addition to the "myths") factors contributing to sexual assault need to be dealt with - factors such as endemic patriarchal social engineering, disparity in power, inadequacies of character leading to violent reactions to actual or perceived loss of power/status, incompetence with emotions / relationships / being human, etc, etc, etc.

All religious / spiritual paths have a particular obligation in terms of preventing sexual assault and dealing with the aftermath - especially as so many religious or other paths have been the scenes of such crimes - sometimes in ways and to extents that are truly horrendous.

And the promised links on the underacknowledged and inappropriately responded to problem of women assaulting men:

... and other links:

and

and

  • “male and LGBTIQA+ [domestic violence] victim survivors regularly face hurdles when seeking help” (ABC);
  • “‘If you’re the bloke it’s your fault’: Why Jeffrey believed he couldn't be a victim of abuse”   https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/child-sexual-abuse-why-male-victims-feel-invisible/uio3etofz   “On average, men take longer to disclose childhood sexual abuse than women, and many struggle to access support services.   ...   The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse found men, on average, take longer to disclose abuse than women. (The average for females was 20.6 years and for males was 25.6 years.)”      and   “NSW government agrees to settle with men who allege they were abused by teacher Helga Lam”   https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02-15/helga-lam-civil-case-settlement-sexual-abuse-claims-nsw-teacher/104933750   “The NSW government has agreed to pay $2.5 million in settlements to four men who allege they were sexually abused as teens by a female teacher who could not be criminally prosecuted because of a historical charge which doesn't apply to women.”

To add a personal note to that, every  single sexual assault I have been subjected to - including the child sexual abuse and the rape, before and after transition (specifically, after gender reassignment surgery) - was committed by a cisgender woman. And every  single  one of those women I confronted about their evil (I didn't confront all of them) came out with the same sort of stereotypical crap ("most enjoy that", "everyone else does that", etc) that men used to come out with when confronted over sexual assault - every  single  one.

One of the other bits of rubbish I've experienced is someone who claimed he was a sleepwalker and would have sex while sleepwalking. It was pretty obviously (from their body language and few other indicators) a blatant attempt to justify rape - there would no consent from the victim (as they portrayed it), and they seemed to be surprised when I objected and stated I would defend myself. For some genuine information on this, see here, here, here, and here - all of which say waking people while sleepwalking is NOT dangerous (another bit of the BS those two males were claiming), but should be done gently.

Although the numbers clearly show that sexual assault is overwhelmingly predominantly committed by cisgender men, cisgender women are NOT saints, they're NOT blameless, and they need to learn how to accept culpability, and be responsible enough to change themselves and stereotypes/culture/systems.
