journalism / press / (mainstream) media

This is so I can start collecting some links on this topic:

  • “How Right Wing Media Took Over America”   https://youtu.be/t2VB3HyAk7Y   This is an excellent consideration on this topic, including history, which includes points such as:   (1) the relevant issues include media fragmentation, political polarisation, (unethical) profitability, and the combination of circumstances (detailed in the video) making a sealed feedback loop;   (2) conservative obsession with liberal press started in the 1950s;   (3) in the 70s Nixon started using the term “media”, rather than “press”, as a disparagement;   (4) reaction to Nixon's dismissal and a book which attacked the press;   (5) the combination of CNN which, when launched in 1980, broke the timeline of the press and “arguably taking reporting outside the realm of the public good and into the realm of rage bait for profitability” (the video has a very good explanation of the mechanics of this), the repeal of the USA’s 1949 Fairness Doctrine under Reagan in 1987 which allowed “the market” to decide what constituted balance (nuanced discussion of the issues for and against in the video), Rush Limbaugh who capitalised on the ending of the Fairness Doctrine to create political commentary as entertainment in 1987 (the video quotes Charles Sykes in Politico: “we now live in the world Limbaugh created, including a political culture that is driven less by facts and ideas than by slurs, rationalisations, conspiracy theories and alternative realities. Limbaugh helped to normalise cruelty, racism and misogyny among a new generation of talkers”), and, from 1996, “super-villain” Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News which “from the start it was an explicitly political operation with devoutly conservative political consultant Roger Ailes at the helm” (the discussion includes “common vocabulary” aka “inclusive code language” - a cult programming technique);   (6) the influence of secondary influences in the right wing (aka “conservative”) ecosystem. The video also looks at foreign influences;   (7) the conservatives (successful) aim of controlling “the full continuum of information production from universities to think tanks to media outlets” using a three-pronged strategy (right-wing media outlets, conservative public affairs programming on public television and radio, and “right-wing media critics to exert pressure on the mainstream media into covering the rights political and policy agenda”). The video also names some specific problematic people and organisations.
