OK, so this word
isn’t ‘spiritual jargon’ … it is, nevertheless jargon – generally from the
world of scientific and engineering technical literature, where it means that a
statement is not agreed by everyone to be universally applicable: there is a
good case to dispute it.
So, for instance, if
I was talking about the respect place of Shakespeare’s plays in the world of
literature, I could say “arguably, Shakespeare was the greatest writer in
recorded history”. This statement is arguable because:
- there is some debate over how much of the work credited to Shakespeare was actually written by Shakespeare (some say part or even all was written by Bacon or others); and
- there are other writers of considerable significance.
So this word is an
admission that good reasons exist to dispute a statement. having admitted that,
though, please consider the statement fairly and reasonably anyway :)
